Patrick Benner - Head Coach
Patrick started playing rugby over ten years ago in the VRU. Starting at Old Dominion University as a collegiate player he learned a strong foundation of the game and basic principles of the sport. Since he has played with United RFC, Newport News RFC, and has been with James River since the fall of 2005.
Still active, Patrick has played for VRU Championship teams and competitive MARFU teams that have finished second, third, and fourth in the MARFU Championships. Patrick has been working with the University of Richmond Men's club as an assistant (back's coach) and advisor.
He has worked, played and learned from various players and coaches throughout the Union. Now acting as the "player/coach" for the club Patrick will ensure that James River continues to be the dominent club in Richmond, VA and a strong competitor in the VRU and Mid-Atlantic. Following my predecessor, I believe in a strong, fast paced game to keep the pressure on the opponent. As a "player/coach" I understand the value of hard, team play to ensure we all work as a unit. As a growing and youthful club we are our strongest when we work as one and play a simple, hard, fast game.
Shade Wilson - Assistant
Shade's experience includes over 20 years playing for clubs like Rugby Super League club St. Louis Bombers, University of Missouri RFC, Telford RUFC in the UK. and James River. He also had rep side appearences for Missouri Rugby Football Union and the Western Rugby Football Mustangs.
He served as head coach of James River for five years in which the club won the division title three years, and once finished as high as the sweet 16 in the national divisional championships. Shade is now please to continue his association with the club as an assistant coach
